Śri Cakra Nyāsa
When one meditates that the virtuous one is in her heart, as bright as vermilion, it is said that she causes delusion, desire, subjugation and attraction – Vāmakeśvarīmatam IV, 42
The following lengthy and complex nyāsa is translated from Nityotsava, a work based on the Kalpasutras, and written by Umanandanatha, a disciple of Bhaskararaya (Bhasurandandanatha), an 18th century devotee of Śrī Vidya who wrote an extensive commentary on the Lalitāsahasranama (Thousand Names of Lalitā).
This last work is in English translation in the Adyar Library series. Bhaskararaya also wrote a work called Varivarahasya, also in English translation. (See bibliography).
The Śrī Cakra Nyasa identifies the different elements of the Śrī Yantra with different parts of the human body. As the devotee touches the particular part of the body, she or he visualises the particular aspect and at the same time pronounces a mantra, linked to the particular matrikas or letters of the Sanskrit alphabet.
For a full understanding of this complex nyāsa, look at the other sections on Śrī Vidya on this web site, in particular, Lalitā and the different mandalas of the yantra. The translation of the Bhāvanopanishad, along with the prayoga or practical application, is also worth having at hand.
Śrī Cakra Nyāsa
After completing the daily declared practice of Śrī Devi, and given ritual offering (upachara), mantra, and holding a flower between folded hands, the devotee should meditate firstly on the form of the Śrī Cakra on the head.
